New Murray County sheriff to take office Jan. 1

MURRAY COUNTY, OK - Residents in Murray County will soon have a new sheriff. Democrat Darrel Richardson beat Republican Dale Fullerton 68% to 32% on Tuesday.

Richardson beat incumbent Sheriff Daren Rogers in the primary election.

The current Murray County Sheriff's Office is no stranger to controversy. Rogers and former deputy Craig Billings are being sued by 21-year-old Logan Grinstead of Sulphur.

In a report, Grinstead said he was badly beaten by Billings while in jail for public intoxication. The alleged incident happened in October 2011.

Richardson, the sheriff-elect, said he hopes to change the department's reputation and work closely with the county's citizens.

He gave us this statement Tuesday:
My goal as Murray County Sheriff will be to provide a safe and secure
environment for the people of Murray County through quality and
professional law enforcement. The Sheriff's Office will work as partners
with our citizens and other law enforcement agencies to preserve the peace by reducing the crime rate in our county. My policy will be an open door to the citizens of Murray County. I will be committed to enhance the quality of life and lessen the criminal fears of all our citizens.
