POTTSBORO, TX - There's new information tonight in the investigation of an arson fire that destroyed a home near Pottosboro earlier this week. Investigators with the Grayson County Sheriff's Office think one of the two men who set the fire may have also been involved in an assault and shooting a short time later.
Billy Watson's trailer home on Spincaster Lane in Locust was destroyed by fire Tuesday night. Investigators say evidence found at the scene indicates the fire was set intentionally by intruders.
"We talked to witnesses in the area, they determined that they saw two men leaving the house, we have good witness statements, and we do believe this is going to be an arson." said Wheeler.
Sergeant Ricky Wheeler says 2 hours after the fire started, while they were still on scene investigating, they were called to a shooting in the same neighborhood.
"We received a call of a shooting and a fight in progress, and that was about a half a mile from where the arson was, we went to that location, there was a subject there that had been shot in the leg, there was an assault that had taken place." Wheeler said.
"I didn't really see it coming, ya know I didn't really expect him to do it, he just hit me and knocked me down and started kicking me." said neighbor, Jerry Nelson.
Jerry Nelson says a young man came on his property on Locust Street and attacked him, forcing him to defend himself.
"I was afraid I was going to be dead in a minute if I didn't do something and I was yelling for someone to get him off me, and it was dark and I couldn't see, I didn't really mean to shoot him, I was going to just shoot off in the ground, maybe scare him." said Nelson.
Wheeler says they believe the man who was shot was also involved in the fire on Spincaster Lane.
"The person that was shot appears to be one of the people that we are looking at for the arson." Rw4secs
The man who was shot is still in the hospital, he's expected to recover. No one has been arrested yet, but Sergeant Wheeler says they hope to have arrest warrants by sometime next week. We'll keep you posted.
