DENISON, TEXAS -- The North Texas Regional Airport has received a grant for $266,185.
The airport plans to buy 38 acres of nearby land to use for a runway protection zone which will protect people on the ground from aircraft accidents and allow pilots more room when they are landing or in case of an aircraft explosion.
The land is currently privately owned and land owners will continue to use the land for cattle grazing.
Airport Director Mike Shahan has been planning to ask for the grant in the airport's 10-year-plan, but with the increase in air traffic, he thought the extra safety was needed much sooner.
The project will begin this summer.
