Okla. man injured after car crashes into Texas State Trooper unit on I-35

GAINESVILLE, Texas -- A Texas State Trooper's patrol car was totaled after it was hit by another car around 9 p.m. Monday along I-35 in Cooke County.

The accident happened near Glenn Polk Autoplex in Gainesville near mile marker 501.

The unidentified trooper was working a minor crash near the northbound lanes of I-35. The trooper was not in his patrol unit when the crash happened and was uninjured.

The driver whose car hit the patrol unit, however, was airlifted to Plano Medical Center by CareFlite.

The driver has been identified as Phillip Schmitt of Seiling, Okla.

Schmitt will undergo toxicology tests to determine if he was under the influence at the time of the crash.

The interstate closed for several hours while traffic was diverted onto the service road at the 501 mile marker.
