PARIS, TX-- Paris' Relay For Life kicked off at 7 tonight with people, like Katie Barnett, walking for those battling, survived or have lost their lives to cancer, including a co-worker who lost their life just today.
"I've watched them suffer and go through many things the least I can do is walk in honor of them, and in memory of them," said Barnett.
Residents can still make their way to North Lamar Stadium to help raise money for a good cause. Organizers say they hope to raise $68,000.
Some of tonight's events included a survivor and caregivers walk as well as a luminaria ceremony.
Lamar County Sheriff Scott Cass and Dispatcher Taneesha Edwards say they're there to support the community and a co-worker who is battling cancer.
"I think it means a lot to her she knows she has our support and we're here for her," said Edwards. "We're team patty all day everyday."
"Some of us go through struggles no one knows," said Sheriff Cass. "To see the survivors get on the track and make their walk, it just lifts their hearts seeing people out supporting them."
Relay For Life runs until 7 Saturday morning. All the money raised will go to the american cancer society.
