Paris mayor stepping down after 3 years

PARIS, TX-- After serving the city of Paris for three years as mayor, Dr. A.J. Hashmi says it's time to pass the gavel into new hands.

At Monday's city council meeting, Mayor Hashmi said his time as mayor is coming to an end next week, and thanked everyone for their support.

Hashmi tells us his decision to not be mayor anymore was made up before this past weekend's election.

He says he is pursuing other avenues at this time, but will still sit on the council representing District 7. Hashmi says he is very proud of his accomplishments during his time as mayor.

"I've had a very successful time," said Mayor Hashmi. "One should step down at the peak, and I think I am stepping down at my peak rather than stepping down at the bottom."

At next Monday's meeting, Benny Plata and Edwin Pickle will be sworn in as new councilmen.

The council will then select a new mayor and mayor pro-tem.
