Paris prepares for Festival of Pumpkins

PARIS, TX -- This Saturday pumpkins, costume-clad people and the undead will take over downtown Paris.

The 13th Annual Festival of Pumpkins will feature over 90 vendors, costume contests, a haunted house and of course, pumpkins.

"If you think of festival that's what's happening in downtown Paris," said Paris Main Street Coordinator Cheri Bedford.

The festival was created to help showcase historic downtown Paris.

"We decided a way we could do that is close down the plaza, bring some vendors, bring some fun downtown and try to get some people come in downtown and appreciate what we have in our historic downtown," said Bedford.

This year Paris Main Street has added a carnival to the festivities.

"We're offering it for free, it's open from 10 to 5 and historically we have only opened until we ran out of candy, which is usually almost immediately," said Bedford. " So we are going to have an all day carnival going on over here on Grand Avenue."

Downtown shops also join in on the fun, competing in the best decorated window competition.

"We are all pretty competitive but we all get along really well, so it's not real mean competition," said Green Boutique owner Kari Daniel. "We all give each other a hard time."

Beware as Zombies will invade downtown for the third annual zombie walk and one store downtown is embracing both events.

"We made a cinder block wall and on display across it is going to be all different kinds of military gear that people can take a picture with a zombie and if a zombie gets them than I don't know we all might be in trouble," said Seasons of Paris employee John O'Donnell.

The festival kicks off at nine Saturday morning and goes till 6 pm. For a full list of events and activities go to
