AURORA, Colo. (AP) - Police say 71 people were shot in a suburban Denver movie theater early Friday during midnight shows of the new Batman movie. Twelve people were killed, ten of them at the theater.

Another 59 adults and children were wounded.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates says there were four showings of the movie at the time and all were sold out. He did not know how many people that amounts to.

Oates says investigators are confident the gunman acted alone.

Police arrested 24-year-old James Holmes, whose apartment four miles away was booby trapped.

Oates says Holmes wore body armor, used an assault rifle, a shotgun and a Glock handgun.

He says Holmes' car was parked in back of the theater.

“Deadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts. These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people. - Mitt Romney, as he signed the Massachusetts assult rifle ban in 2004.

These conservatives have no idea what is coming from Mitt the Twit (His new name in the British Press from all his bumbling around over there!) And you watch...the Obama hate is so deep for these Mittwits, they'll run like cattle to get him elected! And then...well...lets just say he is easily persuaded by Democrats! When Ted Kennedy beat him back in 1992, during a debate Ted said "I am pro-choice. Romney is MULTIPLE CHOICE!" ...and that was way back then! He's a windsock. Has no core values and will say whatever he has to say to get elected. Yeah..yeah..bring on the Obama hate. Two wrongs always make a right...;)

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink! People are lead by people they want to be lead by. Leaders lead. Others follow. Sorry, you can't escape personal responsibility. If you choose to be a follower, choose your leader wisely. That almost seems like an oxymoron. Why are folks looking for a leader? Be your own leader, adopt life principles that build, not destroy, and for goodness sake, DON'T COMPROMISE!

It is sad the 12 people are dead and 58 are left fighting for their life. All went out for some fun and relaxation with friends and family, all innnocent to what fate was in store for them. All because some idiot was allowed to buy a gun. You don't have to prove your sanity to purchase a weapon, so unfortunately these will not be the last to die at the hands of a madman.

Darla, this idiot would have gotten a gun whether legally or illegally so don't start the "let's ban guns" garbage. Do you honestly think someone of this caliber is NOT going to do this because guns or possession of guns are illegal??? Get real!!! Disarming the honest citizens from protecting themselves is not the solution! Do that, and you will only see more crimes like this - I guarantee it!

So, be an idiot and buy a gun. In that kind of situation, you either run or you shoot back........

Why is it that every bad thing that happens around here gets tied back to the government...geez, some ppl are just crazy. Let's just pray for these families and move on.

It's government dependency from the right. A mans actions aren't his own..never...it is always the government that did it. So they are claiming that the government is our ULTIMATE Nanny...responsible for each one of us and every action we take! You are right. Some people ARE just plain crazy and will do things like this from time to time. Always have. Always will. Society needs to stop looking for scapegoats and ALWAYS point the finger at the individual responsible anytime a crime is committed. The left's attempt to hang this on the NRA or gun-owners, second amendment advocates is exactly the same...attempting to place blame outside the people responsible. Everyone always wanting to cash in some political points on a tragedy!

Logic, full government dependency is sponsored by the left. The liberal democrats and this administration are creating a nanny government and loving every minute of it. Under Obama, there are more people on food stamps and government assistance than since the great depression. Yet instead of trying to create jobs, he is golfing, campaigning, and pushing new taxes on the people. Republicans, unlike democrats, are all about personal responsibilty and accountability and I believe that everyone who is capable of thinking knows that. Having said all this, it doesn't matter who is in office or who is president, idiots like this guy don't care!

More Logic, good and accurate assessment! Democrats whine abour "bad things" being tied back to the government, but an oppressive, lawless, and secret government such as the one we have now, does contribute to the overall decay of society. That's just the way it is and it doesn't matter who believes it or now. I will admit, that morons like this mass murderer probably don't care who is president or what party they are with, but the real problem is just big government and oppressive policies and we are headed for more if we don't save America in November! You can't just ignore the law like the Obama admin does (give illegal aliens amnesty), hide sinister secrets from the people (Fast & Furious), increase taxes on the middle class (Obamacare), increase government spending (Obama up to $16 trillion), dictate what people eat and drink (Bloomberg), kill jobs (Obamacare), threaten the 2nd Amendment, while congress exempts themselves from these outlandish acts, and expect people to just go on living like normal when their world has been ripped apart. This guy was clearly crazy, but, as someone has already said, maybe this was his revenge on society for what he feels society did to him. I say we fry him, but I'm sure the democrats will want to rehabilitate him!

I don't think laws can control events like this that are as old as mankind, but to say that wide open gun laws were in effect is factually wrong. Yes, you have your facts wrong once again! Aurora has a ban on CCW in the city limits, a ban on loaded firearms in a vehicle in city limits, and obviously, bans on CCW in places like movie theaters. Not saying they allowed the event to happen or prevented it from being stopped, but your claim that open carry laws were in place and had no effect is wrong.

i dont think gun control laws or who,s going to be president and why we have a oppressive government crossed that man,s mind when he shot all those people.you can control guns all you want but that just means its a harder process for the honest people to defend themselves.the criminals and bad people already have them, they dont care about gun control,or who,s going to be president.seems to me that the man is just plain crazy..

That's the point, he wasn't crazy, he was a brilliant science student and was unable to find a job with his new doctoral degree in science that he spent his whole life preparing for. Our society destroyed his dreams, he destroyed societies. Obama, in his idiocy reacted with a pledge of support from the FBI to the local PD. MORE GOVERNMENT isn't going to fix this problem, and by the president giving his public attention is just going to make some other failed citizen realize he CAN have an effect on society after all! (worst thing O could have done is give him attention, and making him instantly famous.

Expected comments from a liberal democratic sheep. Can't argue on the facts so just say that whoever disagrees with you has a tiny little brain and makes up scary things. Lorenzo, you are 100% correct! Anyone who believes the Obama BS is the one who is falling for lies and propoganda! We have the worst economy since the great depression, $16 TRILLION in debt (thanks Oblamer), the highest unemployment (thanks again, Oblamer), highest number on govt. assistance, worst housing market (thank you Bawney Fwank (D)), etc., yet there are people who honestly believe Obama, in all his greatness, has NOTHING to do with this. Wow! Who is mindless? It is clear! If all you have to do is fly around the world at taxpayer expense, golf, and say "it's not my fault", I could be president! We need a leader and someone who will turn things around, not a do-nothing president who fails and ALWAYS blames others for his ignorance, mistakes, and shortcomings!

When you have an overly oppressive government that sucks the life out of it's citizens, steals their money and sends their jobs overseas and gives what's left to the rich..... people reach a breaking point and lash out at society in general. This could get worse if we don't get some real leaders in our country. The two bozos duking it out for the presidency don't qualify. Of course they will use this to try to take away our weapons, then only the crazies will have them....and the nationalized police force they want...

Lorenzo, I couldn't agree more with you! When they try to take our weapons away, it will be really bad! I wonder if most people are just too stupid to notice that the cities with the tightest gun control laws (Chicago, LA, Detroit, D.C., NY, etc.) usually have the worst violent crime rates!

Was he military or militia or just a crazy bada??#@.I mean really he was alone right?Think people this was planned they are paying these people to do this so they can BAN GUNS?Or is it just coincidence this happens when the biggest gun ban campaign is on the rampage. And just before an election to many ?? marks for me. I don't believe he acted alone that being said I was not there and i have no idea who this person is. i think this deserves a very diligent investigation by more than just the government investiGATORS.
