Police release new details on fatal Hwy 75 pedestrian accident

SHERMAN, TX -- Police are releasing new details in the death of a pedestrian along Hwy 75 late Friday night.

Sgt. D.M. Hampton said Hope Douglas, 26, got out of the car she was traveling in, after an argument with the driver. She was trying to flag down another vehicle to catch a ride. That's when a pickup truck hit her, killing her on the scene, he said.

Tony Douglas, Hope's uncle, said she was well-loved - and the family is having a hard time dealing with her death.

"If you ever needed anything, anything whatsoever, she was always there for you," he said. "She was a great, great young lady."

Hampton said Hope Douglas was standing in one of the lanes of Hwy 75 in front of Tyson chicken.

"And apparently she had gotten out, and potentially may have been trying to flag down a vehicle to get another ride with or something," he said.

They're still investigating where she was standing when she was hit, he said.

"With it being dark, maybe she thought she was on the shoulder of the roadway when she was actually on one of the lanes of traffic," Hampton said.

Police ruled the incident accidental, and are not pressing charges against the truck driver who hit Douglas, Hampton said.

"There was nothing there that they found that would warrant pressing criminal charges against them," he said.

Tony Douglass said Hope leaves behind two kids, ages six and eight, and a large, loving family.

"She will be sorely, sorely missed. Sorely missed," he said.

Hope Douglas' funeral is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Harvest Time Assembly of God. A wake will be held for family on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cravens funeral home.

A donation fund is set up with Cravens funeral home. Anyone wishing to donate can drop donations in person at Cravens or over the phone.
