Prison escapee Jason Bales found and back at Mack Alford

STRINGTOWN, OKLAHOMA -- Officials with Mack Alford Correctional Center say convicted killer and prison escapee Jason Bales was apprehended at 10:30 Sunday morning in Hugo.

However, authorities have not told us exactly where they located him.

A statement from the prison says Bales escaped from the facility on December 3rd and was not present during a routine count around 7:15 Monday morning.

Bales is serving life without parole for killing his girlfriend's mother, Stephany Glass, back in 2006.

After nearly spending a week as a free man, he was processed back into Mack Alford Sunday afternoon.

Stringtown resident Michael Brown says he thinks he saw Bales Friday evening in Coalgate.

"He tried to walk back up Ron Hill and started trying to hitch hike and I just kept going and I came to Stringtown at the Travel Plaza and I told the guards that I seen him at Ron Hill," Brown said.

He says he's not the only resident who might have seen Bales on the run.

"And then, some other kids on the school bus seen him and they told the police," Brown said.

Brown says he's glad Bales is back in prison, but some people in Atoka County weren't scared of him to begin with.

"It didn't really matter if he got back, if he went back or whatever. We got guns, we're not scared of no prisoner," Brown said.

News 12 reached out to Mack Alford and the Choctaw County Sheriff's Office for more information on Bales being apprehended, but they declined comment.

We'll bring you more details as they become available.
