AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas Senate has voted to have the state pay for some teachers to get special training to respond to school shooting situations.

Texas law already allows school districts to let teachers who have concealed handgun license holders to carry their weapons onto campus. The Senate wants the state pay for those teachers to have special weapons and response training.

The bill limits the training to two teachers per school. Sen. Dan Patrick, a Houston Republican, says the Texas Department of Public Safety will develop the training.

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst proposed the idea after the December 2012 shootings at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

Patrick says that shooting "changed the landscape of school safety."

The bill now goes to the House for consideration.
