Senators propose adding $100M for women's health

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A working group of Texas senators has recommending boosting spending on women's health programs across the state.

Health and Human Services Chairwoman Jane Nelson made the recommendation on Thursday while discussing the state health budget.

Nelson said the boost in spending will help more poor women get family planning services and cancer prevention screenings.

The move comes after Texas lawmakers cut $73.6 million from family planning services in 2011. During the last session, lawmakers also banned any group with ties to abortion providers from receiving state funds for non-abortion related services. Planned Parenthood lost a lawsuit challenging the provision.

The new restriction has led to concerns about a shortage of clinics providing women's health services.

Nelson said the boost in spending should lead to more doctors and clinics participating in state health programs.
