SHERMAN, TX--At a press conference in Sherman Tuesday morning candidate for Grayson County Sheriff Jonny Waldrip wanted to make one thing perfectly clear.

"There was never any intent to break the law," said Waldrip.

Waldrip, a former Texas Ranger, put a symbol on his campaign signs that resembles a Texas Ranger Badge; a class A misdemeanor if the likeness is used without permission. Waldrip says while he doesn't believe he has broken the law, he will alter his signs.

"We will be sure that there is no doubt cast on our election, we will go the extra mile," said Waldrip.

Waldrip points out, that he has used the Ranger symbol in past elections, with no objections, and that several other former Texas Rangers have used similar images of the badge in campaigns across the state. He says all the controversy has people questioning if this ranger badge battle is politically motivated but District Attorney Joe Brown says that's not the case.

"Well it is certainly not politically motivated, if it had been there was a violation and we could have issued an arrest warrant if we wanted to," said Brown.

While the Waldrip campaign has agreed to change the signs, that won't be easy, since the signs are spread out all across Grayson County.

"I have a lot of signs out there, people came and got them 20 at a time, I don't know where they are at," said Waldrip.

If you have a Johnny Waldrip campaign sign you are asked to contact the campaign with its location so it can be altered, or you can just paint over the image of the Ranger badge yourself. Brown has given the campaign two weeks to comply.

"There aren't going to be any criminal charges, let's just get this behind us," said Brown.
