Sunday Afternoon and Evening ... Scattered intense thunderstorms are expected, some severe. Large hail, high winds and the potential for isolated tornadoes will be the main threats. Locally heavy is rain also possible with these storms.
SHERMAN, TX -- Thousands took advantage of today's weather and headed out to enjoy some arts, crafts and food at the Sherman Arts Festival. The festival is a Sherman tradition.
Morgan Downing shows us one booth that's become a favorite at the festival since the '90s.
For 30 years, people have been coming out to the Sherman Arts Festival
"It's just gotten bigger and better and that' s really a testament to how many people get involved in this event," organizer, Connie Jones said.
Bigger that's for sure. More than 100 vendors were out with plenty to do for those of all ages. Even our four legged friends had a good time.
"There's a lot of cool things out here that you can do to pass the time," visitor Connor Jackson said.
Connor Jackson is a young guy, but he has already adopted into the tradition of the arts festival.
"Well, I come here every year. I come here mainly for the arts fest demonstration of Maxwell's Taekwondo," Jackson said.
One booth that is a popular hit, the pumpkins with faces.
"Arts fest just kicks off fall and there's nothing better that speaks fall than pumpkins," pumpkin painter Lori Cannon said.
Lori Cannon has been bringing her pumpkins to the Sherman Arts Festival since 1999 and they were a tradition even before that. She says a lot goes into preparing the pumpkins for the festival. They all have their own personality.
"We clean them and then we draw them and then we kinda look at them and decide 'you need tear drop eyes', or 'you're a funny little pumpkin', or 'you need to be scary'." Cannon said. "So, they just kind of start talking to you as you draw, and then as they paint they come to life."
She thinks she'll sell,
"I would guess between 200 to 250 of them," Cannon said.
Homemade crafts, entertainment, face painting, the list goes on. Of course, you can't forget the food.
Old fashioned soda, homemade ice cream, it's no wonder the festival attracts thousands of people.
"The people that create it, the people that look forward to it, the community members that look forward to it. I think that's at the heart and soul of the festival," Jones said.
