SHERMAN, TX - School officials in Sherman have decided to only make up 2 of the 7 days students missed because of the snow.

Students will now have to go to school on May 20th and May 27th. Those days were set in advance to be used for "Bad Weather Makeup." The April 22nd Early Release Day will also now be a regular school day.

The school district is applying to the Texas Education Agency for a waiver on the other 5 days missed. If the TEA doesn't approve the waiver request, the remaining 5 days will have to rescheduled as well.

Make 'em use the spring break to make up the school days. Spring break is only for the parents to plan a vacation anyway.

I hope that the Sherman superintendent and school board members realize that no matter what decision they made, someone is going to gripe and complain. They made the decision to ask for a waiver and people complain they should have made the days up. If they didn't ask for a waiver and instead wanted to use spring break you would complain that vacation plans have been made that week and going to school will ruin the plans. Sherman is also making the day up on Good Friday by deleting the 1/2 day and adding a full day - and they are making 2 days up using the snow days. Making the day up on Memorial Day is a waste since it falls in the last week of school. This will do nothing to contribute to TAKS scoring standards as testing will be long past by that time. It was a freak winter, never in my lifetime of 50 years do I remember this area missing 7 days of school due to winter conditions. Dr. Hambrick and the school board members made a good sound decision, one that I applaude them for.

Make up all the days! Everyone always talks about how our standards are falling, this will just contribute to it. And extend the school year while you're at it. Make us #1 again.
