SILO, OK-Bryan county voters will head to the polls next month to cast their ballots in a Silo school bond election. Officials said it would ease overcrowding and, even though it comes with a price tag, residents we talk to say it's much needed.

Silo superintendent, Dr. Bill Caruthers said they need to update and expand their schools. Right now the buildings can only accommodate 300 students, but they have more than 800 enrolled.
Caruthers said Tuesday night's public meeting was meant to inform residents and employees about the proposed $2.3 million bond. He said the bond will help the district build 16 new classrooms, renovate the entrance of the elementary school and high school, build a new AG building and reconstruct the school bus garage, which currently has a blind corner that can pose a danger for students crossing.
Caruthers said, if the bond passes, residents would pay an additional 9% a month in their taxes for the first year; so for every hundred dollars, you'd pay $10.74.
Caruthers also said that rate would decrease over the next ten years.

"Well we're excited about it, we hope people understand the need and realize we're trying to do it in the most frugal manner possible while serving our kids in the most responsible way," he said.

And parent, Jeanie Baxer agreed.

"We deserve this. Our kids deserve it, they need something nice, be proud of, it would be good for the teachers. It would be good for everybody. It's a good thing," she said.

The bond election will be Valentine's day, February 14th.
