TXDOT tackles car seat safety

SHERMAN, TX--- Safety is a top priority for many parents on the way to school. Recently the Texas Department of Transportation launched a program aimed to help save children's lives by offering year-round car seat inspections.

Jeff Galewaler, a TXDOT technician, says there are many things to think about when buying a car seat.

"There are different types of safety seats for each age group, each weight level, and every individual child." said Galewaler

"Roughly 3 out of 4 car seats are installed improperly." said Turner

According to TXDOT spokesman Tray Turner, vehicle incidents are the number one cause of deaths for children from 3 to 14, a statistic that hits close to home for local mom Shannon Donihoo.

"A year ago I got into a car accident with him, and was fine. We got rear-ended, and all that happened was it scared him badly," said Donihoo

After the wreck, Donihoo was shown by a police officer how to install a seat properly, something she's grateful for.

"I mean you never know when something bad is going to happen, and that one tip is going to make all the difference," said Donihoo

A tip that Galewaler hopes can save many lives.

"I have a child myself, so when I go and install a child safety seat, I'm installing that seat as if it was my own child," said Galewaler.
