AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas Rep. Tom Craddick is proposing a statewide ban on texting while driving.

The House Transportation Committee will hear testimony on Tuesday from people who lost relatives to traffic accidents that involved distracted driving.

The widow of an Army helicopter gunner is expected to describe the crash that killed her husband after he had survived combat service in Iraq.

The proposed bill is named for Alex Brown, a West Texas teenager who rolled her car over and died while texting on the way to school one day in 2009. Since then, her parents have urged drivers around the country to sign a pledge renouncing the use of texting in their cars.

The National Conference of State Legislatures says 39 states have already banned texting behind the wheel.
