Texoma Tornadoes train for state Special Olympics meet

DENISON, TX-More than 30 special needs athletes in Grayson County trained hard to get ready for the big dance. Victoria Maranan has more.
Jamie Domie and his teammates prepped for the big game Saturday.

"We do the 200, the relay and the long jump," he said.

He is one of 34 athletes with the Texoma Tornadoes heading to Arlington for the Special Olympics Summer Games.

"Do good, we're gonna win it, we're gonna get first prize," said Domie.

The team's assistant coach, Jeremy Green, said the Tornadoes have been working hard all year.

"It's been great, it's just tremendous turn around from last year. I mean we got a group of great guys that run hard and they say they practice hard and they compete hard so they're ready for it," he said.

"This is what he looks forward to. He lives for this every year and, for him not to get to go, will be very very disappointing, heartbreaking to him," said parent, Tami Connor.

One of Connor’s sons, Jason, is competing with the Tornadoes. Jason has cerebral palsy and Connor said she's very impressed with his skills in track, winning the gold medal several times.

"It's awesome, it really is, it's rewarding, you know? People say ‘how do you do it?’ You don't know what you have until you have a child in Special Olympics," she said.

The Summer Games will be May 24th at the University of Texas at Arlington.
The Texoma Tornadoes will be competing in track, cycling, softball and tennis.
