DENISON, TX-That drop in crime can also be attributed to dedicated law enforcement. Friday, we honor one officer who's been patrolling the streets and solving crimes for over 6 decades.
Captain B.F. Wade has been a law enforcement officer for 63 years. He is one of only three recipients of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers "Dinosaur Award" for over 60 years of service and he's not planning to retire his badge anytime soon.
Grayson College police captain, B.F. Wade still does his beats even after over 60 years of service.
"What have I done all my life? That's all I've done. It's interesting, I've had an interesting life," he said.
Wade got into law enforcement in 1949 after he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
"I needed a job," he laughed.
Wade started his career with the Sherman Police Department when there were only 16 officers.
"To begin working, there's no schooling. They put a uniform on you and put you on the street and that's your training. I had no training but that's how I got started," he said.
After two years as a police officer, Wade joined the Texas Highway Patrol. It brought him all over Texas, from Austin, Harlingen to Midland, he even patrolled Grayson and Fannin Counties for 18 years. And after 33 years as a state trooper, Wade retired in 1984 to work for the U.S. Marshal's service.
"I felt that I have done my job well and have been able to help a lot of people along the way," he said.
But four years later, he decided to come back into law enforcement.
Wade joined the Grayson College Campus police in 1992 and has been there ever since, sharing his wisdom to current and future officers.
"Always let your conscience be your guide, but don't ever let it come back to haunt you, things that you did when you knew you shouldn't do it. Just keep your nose clean and do a good job everyday," he said.
"It's an honor, it really is to have someone that his spanned law enforcement that long. He's been there, done that," said Grayson College Police Chief, Andrew McPherson.
And after 63 years, Wade said he's not planning to retire.
"Why should I? My health is good. Next month I'll be 85 years old. I enjoy working."
Captain Wade also happens to be one of the first Texas State Troopers to be trained to use a breathalizer in 1968.
He lives in Sherman with his wife of 65 years, Marie.
