Texomans celebrate Labor Day, unsure of the history

Labor day is a widely celebrated holiday. But the history behind the day is not widely known.

Labor day started in the1880's, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The first Labor Day was celebrated on a Tuesday, but it was changed in 1884 to the first Monday in September.

The Central Labor Union helped spread it nationwide, calling it a "workingmen's holiday."

Here in Texoma, not everyone knows the history of the day either.

Local resident Jeff Banda admitted he doesn't know the details.

Neither did Linda Isenberg, another Texoma resident.

But while not everyone knew the exact details, just about everyone we talked to came close.

"I feel like it's to honor our workers and our American system of economics," Bootie Terrell, Texoma resident, said.

But even though everyone was fuzzy on the details, Texomans know how to celebrate.

Isenberg said she's enjoying the day complete with family and a cookout.

"I'm just spending the day out with my sons," she said. "One just came back from Kuwait."

Banda said the holiday gives him a chance to see family he doesn't see often.

"We moved away from home a couple years ago, so the Family comes up to see us in Sherman," he said.

And Terrell said she usually celebrates with a cookout or brunch - or even shopping.

It's unclear exactly who proposed the idea. Some people credit Peter J. McGuire, co-founder of the American Federation of Labor. Others credit Matthew Maguire of the Central Labor Union, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
