Three people dead in Hunt Co. accident

CELESTE, TX - A head-on collision Thursday night killed three people in Hunt County.

Texas DPS troopers said it happened at around 7:45 Thursday night along U.S. Highway 69 just between Celeste and Kingston. Investigators said a car traveling south on U.S. 69 crossed over to the northbound lane hitting an SUV full-speed, then burst into flames.

Both drivers and a passenger died at the scene.

Texas DPS and Celeste Volunteer Fire Department responded. DPS Trooper Cpl. J. Simpson said they didn't see evidence of either car stopping.

"There's really no braking. The speed limit in this area is 70 miles per hour so there's really no evidence of anyone braking prior to contact," he said.

No names have been released and the accident is still under investigation.

U.S. Highway 69 in Celeste is back open.
