Tom Bean students learn the dangers of texting and driving

TOM BEAN, TX -- In 2011, there were nearly 1500 crashes in Grayson County, many due to distracted driving. That is why students at Tom Bean High School got a lesson on the dangers of texting and driving Friday.

Authorities say nearly 30% of all crashes in the state of Texas are due to distracted driving. And Tom Bean High School is joining a number of groups to help save lives by stopping texting and driving.

"I learned about a girl who texted her mom 'yeah i'm heading home' and she's brain dead now. So, it really hit close to home," said Luna McMeen.

Tom Bean sophomore, Luna McMeen, is part of the Family Career and Community Leaders of America program, who brought texting and driving awareness to the school.

"If we can get to them now, and tell them and have them form good driving habits, then you won't have adults on the road that have been texting and driving their whole life," said McMeen.

The State of Texas currently does not have a ban on texting and driving, for drivers over the age of 18. But just this week, a House Committee voted in favor of a texting ban. Sending it to the full House for consideration.

"Bottom line is laws aren't going to change people's behavior laws are not going to make people follow the rules, we have to really get out there and change the mentality of how dangerous it is," said Daniel Herring, Law Enforcement liaison.

To show students just how dangerous it is, they drove around a closed course in golf carts while texting, trying not to hit the orange cones. Students gave it their best shot.

97% of teens say it is wrong to text and drive, but 43% still admit to doing so.

An AT&T survey says, if you ask someone to stop texting while they are driving, 90% of the time they will.

"Don't just sit back and let everyone text and put everyone's lives at risk, but yet go ahead and speak up and save your own life," said Bret Bennett, store manager at AT&T.
