U. of Okla. president hopes for year of education

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - University of Oklahoma President David Boren says he hopes the coming legislative session will be "the year of education."

Boren said during an OU Board of Regents meeting Friday in Oklahoma City that OU has seen state funding fall by $125 million in the past three years.

Boren told The Associated Press that any increase in tuition and fees will depend on the level of state funding. OU's three campuses have a current operating budget of about $1.6 billion. Boren says state funding makes up about 14 percent of the budget - down from about 32 percent when he became president in 1994.

Tuition and fees for in-state OU students are currently $8,705.50 a year while out-of-state students pay $20,342.50 after a 3 percent increase for the current academic year.
