Woman arrested in connection with murder

GAINESVILLE, TX -- Cooke County authorities say a suspect in the 2009 killing of a Gainesville man is now behind bars.

Carla Cox turned herself in to sheriff's investigators Thursday. Cooke County Sheriff, Mike Compton, says she was arrested in connection with the murder of her boyfriend, Barry Pruitt.

Cox was indicted for the crime Wednesday. The sheriff says after nearly four years, he believes they have the suspect in custody.

January 10, 2009 emergency officials were called to this house on Spring Creek Road in Gainesville. The home was on fire and the body of 33-year-old Barry Pruitt was inside. Just weeks after the fire, investigators learned his death was no accident.

"During the autopsy it was discovered he was a victim of homicide. He did not die in the fire," Sheriff Compton said.

Investigators will not release how Pruitt died, but say he was killed before the fire broke out around 2:00 a.m.

Pruitt's girlfriend, Carla Cox, and their young daughter were at home but escaped without injury.

Now, after almost four years, Sheriff Compton says investigators believe it was Cox who killed Pruitt.

"We've had to chase down a lot of rumors and things of that nature, and it's taken awhile," Sheriff Compton said.

Sheriff Compton says Cox has been a person of interest from the beginning.

"We feel like we have the correct person, but justice still has to take it's course," Sheriff Compton said.

Cox is being held on $500,000 bond in the Cooke County Jail.
