DURANT, OK-A Durant man has been named "athlete of the year" by the Oklahoma Special Olympics.
34-year-old Ricky Barnes was chosen out more than 4,400 athletes from across the state.
He received the award at the Special Olympics Summer Games earlier this month. Barnes showed his skills in basketball, volleyball, bowling and track and field.
Steven Remshardt has been training Barnes for 20 years and said the athlete is hardworking, dedicated and has displayed good sportsmanship.

"Wonderful, it's an honor. It's an honor to have somebody in our area. It's an honor, period, to be athlete of the year," he said.

Barnes is training to play softball for the next games.
