SHERMAN, TX - The Texoma Red Cross wrapped up their annual community garage sale a the Midway Mall today. Jalah Gray talked with volunteers who say with the money they raised they'll be ready to respond this tornado season.
"This is a great time of year to see the need for the Red Cross, and to encourage people to come out and support us." said volunteer, Kelli Moeller.
Red Cross wrapped up their annual community garage sale on Sunday, with about $20,000 raised.
"We had a lot of merchandise, we had a lot of folks in, and as you can see we've sold out." Moeller said.
Organizers say the money raised comes just in time for tornado season.
"All of our funds have to be raised, we don't receive any government assistance, so all of that money goes back in the community if you see a need in the form of disaster." said Moeller.
This is Kelli Moeller's 5th year on the board of directors. She says this time of year, people are more aware of the need for Red Cross.
"The timeliness of this event, we have it in April every year, so it's right in the middle of tornado season, so the awareness of the need, is so great, I think that really benefits us." said Moeller.
But when they started collecting donations for the sale, volunteers say they weren't sure what to expect.
"Our donations were off to kind of a rocky start, I think people weren't really cleaning out their garages and closets and thinking about donations." said Jim Durham.
"ln this economy we didn't have any idea what would happen, or what kind of donations we'd have, and the community has come through as always to help us and support us." Sharon Watson said.
The Red Cross say this year's sale raised several thousand dollars more than last year's.
