Oklahoma DHS revises child welfare reform plan

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Abused and neglected babies would no longer be housed in state shelters under a revised child welfare reform plan from the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.

Officials also pledged to improve customer service at the department, which developed the proposal as part of a settlement of a federal class-action lawsuit over the treatment of children in state custody.

The Oklahoman (http://bit.ly/J1Ok54) reports that officials presented monitors with the initial draft of its plan in late March. The monitors received comments from the child advocacy group that sued the agency, and then met with DHS officials to discuss suggested changes.

DHS submitted a revised reform plan on Tuesday.

The revision calls for eliminating the use of shelters for children younger than 6 by the end of 2012 instead of June 2013.
