DENISON, TX -- It was a big celebration in Denison Saturday. Hundreds celebrated President Dwight D. Eisenhower's birthday with several activities, but it was a special ceremony recognizing our area's World War II veterans that kicked off the celebration.

Dozens gathered at President Dwight D. Eisenhower's monument Saturday not only to celebrate his birthday... But to honor World War II veterans who fought for our freedom.

"I think it's really good because, you know, all of us sacrificed a whole lot. And so, I think it's good to be recognized today and I think it's a really nice thing to do," World War II veteran Manuel Sampson said.

"It's a patriotic thing, and to give homage to veterans is a very good gesture," World War II veteran Melvin Nelson said.

Veterans Manuel Sampson and Melvin Nelson were two of 17 recognized by the city of Denison.

"We really want to honor our veterans and let them know, and their families, how much we appreciate them making us able to live in a free country," Donna Dow said.

Saturday's ceremony was also a showcase for new landscaping donated by the Johnston family, and a new granite bench donated by the Military Order of the Purple Hearts, Chapter 612

"It represents for all the veterans that's been wounded in all wars and all conflicts. It means a lot to me. It means a lot to all the other veterans," veteran Luther Johnson said.

Main Street director, Donna Dow, says each year this site sees more beautification and more visitors.

Saturday 105 veteran bricks were added to the walk way, making the monument a place to reflect on our country's history and pay tribute to those who played a part in it.

"it should never be forgotten. The history should never be forgotten," Nelson said.

"I'm hoping that future generations, and more schools and parents will tell their kids and let them understand that somebody had to die for your freedom. Somebody had to shed some blood for your freedom," Johnson said.
