Gardening Texoma: Alternative Christmas Trees

KXII Gardening Texoma : Alternative Christmas Trees

• Alternative Christmas trees such as Blue Spruce, Leland Cypress, Alderica Pine, or other varieties of pine trees that grow in sandy soil, found predominantly around the red river, can be used indoors as living Christmas trees.
• Place a wide and high enough saucer underneath the tree so that periodic watering during the holiday season will be contained and not ruining your floors.
• Pines are not only traditional but are evergreens that can be used as screens or year round greenery.
Other alternatives to indoor living holiday plants are:
• Poinsettias
• Christmas Cacti
• Rosemary in topiary (pruned into shapes) pentacles, wreaths, and poodled.

Other alternative indoor trees
• Yaupon “Will Fleming” topiaried in a spiral, pom- pom, and poodled.
Planting:
• Leland Cypress, Alderica Pines, and Blue Spruce grow to be 30-60 ft high and 15-30 feet wide.
So you have better give them some room.
• Another easy native alternative is our Red Eastern Cedar.
• Always plant the tree high in a saucer shaped ugly hole.
• When back filling your new planted tree, be sure to use water to back fill the soil. This will settle the soil and get rid of any air pockets which can cause calcogens.
