The Sherman Community Garden had a work day this past Saturday from 9am-2pm, on the corner of Pacific and Maxey Streets in Sherman, Texas. This is a report of the happenings when the community came together.
On Saturday, approximately 40 volunteers came in shifts and worked to install 5 raised gardens, raised water lines, and tilled the entire lot to seed with cover crops of heary vetch and rye grass. Each of the raised beds was laid with 10 layers of newspaper and mulched on top in order to have a dry, accessible perimeter around each of the gardens.
The following vegetable seeds were sown: spinach, radish, chard lettuce, collard, garlic, beets, kale, mustard greens, and will do society onions A designation of 10% of the harvested crop has been set aside for the area shelters to add vegetable flora to the community kitchens.
Barbara Grisham from the Grayson County Master Gardener Organization made a presentation to the Board Members on Seed Fertility, Propagation, and in general Fertility.
The charity program for this week is selling $5.00 discount cards to Belk Department Store. For more information, please call Texoma Landscapes at 903-465-5456. All funds raised will be used to build a tool shed. Barbara Grisham has pledged a $100 Gift from the Master Gardeners towards our shed. We now have seed money to start this project.
