Gardening Texoma: Soil Preparation

This is the first of a 3 part series for Spring gardening:
1. Soil Preparation
2. The Proper Plants
3. Simple Guide for Maintenance
Series 1 – Soil Prep:
 The keys to success for good soil preparation:
• Soil Structure (loose, deep and oxygenated)
• Don’t work on soil that’s too wet that dries into large clumps
• Drainage
o Soil Composition
o The ability to leech the water away
o No standing water under drainage for long periods of time
o We want good filtration and percolation
 Sand percolates rather quickly
 Sandy loam percolates moderately
 Clay does not percolate at all or slowly
• I recommend raised beds
• Clear all weeds from the area
• The components for life are humus and compost
• Don’t walk on beds after prepared (will compact soil)
• Add organic matter, consider for mineral composition and drainage:
o Decomposed granite
o Green Sand
o Alfalfa
o Perlite or Vermiculite (I don’t recommend and I think is wasteful)
o Expanded Shale
• Good soil prep from the beginning will do more than anything else to guarantee successful plant growth.
