This week we are talking with families who say they have a lot to be thankful for. I sat down with the Brock family of Gainesville..where Shanna a mother of 3 has brain tumors. They tell me as she continues to fight the cancer they are grateful for everyday they can spend together.
The Brock's are a close knit family, often taking trips to the park to spend time together, but these trips are becoming more difficult. Shanna Brock has two brain tumors, frequently suffering with seizures, headaches and taking numerous trips to the hospital.
"I get really tired during the day, I get confused a lot and forgetful," Shanna said.
"Its been really troubling. I love my wife more than anything in the whole world and to know that she is going through these tumors is really hard to deal with. Ever since I met her it has brought joy to my life and thinking about trying to life without her, its just unacceptable so this thing has got me really scared," Kevin said.
Shanna and her husband Kevin are unemployed and studying as full time students at Grand Canyon University on-line, Shanna maintaining a 4.0 gpa. She says even through her pain, she is determined to make a better life their 3 children. But with no health insurance she is not able to get the help she needs.
"Ive been trying to get an MRI and biopsy done so that MD Anderson can see me. but that hasn't been successful. i have trouble getting medicaid and I have trouble getting getting insurance so it has been a difficult time getting treated by for my tumors," Shanna said.
"I want to try and get them done as soon as possible because the sooner we can find out exactly what we need to do and what kinds of actions we need to take medically the sooner she can get better and sh can continue being my wife and the kids mother so that's all important," Kevin said.
Right now she is taking medication to control her seizures and headaches. She says in-spite of the bad, some good has come from her sickness.
"It brought us together closer as a family. They are very supportive and very good children and there is a lot of love in my family
With two years of school to go Brock says she wont give up the fight for her life. To be able to beat the cancer and finish school is a victory that not only she can be proud of but her children as well.
"My dreams are very important to me and its important to my kids that I graduate from college so I do not let anything hold me back from being successful
As they prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday the Brock's say they have a lot to thankful for this year
"I'm thankful for my family and I am thankful for the gift of life and the gift of knowledge ,"Shanna said.
"I'm thankful that we are all alive, thankful that we are all some what healthy, I thank God every day for my family, for the fact that we all love each other so much and you cant put a price tag on love and this is better than anything else," Kevin said.
Right now Shanna needs 4-thousand dollars for a biopsy.
If you would like to help there is a benefit account open in her name at the City Credit Union on Grand Street in Gainesville.
