Parents, pay attention: do you know those trendy 'wheeled' sneakers your kids all want?
It turns out they're more dangerous than you may have thought.
It's called "heeling," named after Heelys, the most popular brand of shoes with wheels. They're sold in 70 countries and are so hot that Carrollton, Texas-based Heelys, Incorporated recently landed atop Business Week's annual list of fastest growing companies.
But the journal of pediatrics reports that over a ten-week period last summer in just one hospital that 67 children were treated for injuries from Heelys or strap-on wheels called street gliders.
Now the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons is issuing new safety advice that recommends helmets, wrist protectors and knee and elbow pads for kids who wear wheeled shoes.
