GRAYSON COUNTY, TX- Tonight is the night! The biggest football game of the season. The Battle of the Axe will be played at the Bearcat Stadium between Denison and Sherman High Schools. It's the only annual game in Texas that's been played for 100 years or more. And it's listed as one of Texas' Top Ten High School Rivalries.
The competition happens not only with the football teams, but among those who are their biggest supporters - the cheerleaders.
“We’re the Sherman bearcats, and we’re the best!” said the Sherman cheerleaders.
“We’re the Denison Yellow Jackets, and we’re the best!” said the Denison cheerleaders.
Weeks of practice getting ready for the big game keep these students busy. They also use their leadership and excitement daily to help get the entire school into the spirit of the game.
”We like to make sure that the pep rally is so extravagant. We’ve just been practicing for 2 weeks now. Just trying to make sure that everything’s perfect,” said Sherman Co-Captain, Taylor Leslie.
Denison's Captain, Deanna Wood said, ”Everyday this week, our school has had a different dress up day. And today was ‘don’t sweat the bearcats’, so we all wore sweats. And then Friday, our actual gameday the whole school is going to dress up in camo. And we are ready for war!”
And each school has an opinion about why they are the best.
Sherman Co-Captain Bianca Moreno stated, “Our cheer squad is like a big, happy family. We all get along. We have an outstanding group of girls this year are very hard working. I’m happy to be working with them this year.”
Wood added that, at Denison, ”It’s not just the high school or just the football team competing. It’s cheerleaders, singerette, band, color guard, and all the businesses, churches. We just all come together and we’re taking home the axe.”
KXII wishes both teams the best of luck at the Battle of the Axe!
