GAINESVILLE, TX -- With the first day of school just around the corner for many kids in Texoma, the days left to enjoy weekday family outings are numbered. For this Moms Everyday segment on family fun, we revisit the Frank Buck Zoo.

For the past 80 years, Frank Buck Zoo has been a Texoma staple for family visits and student field trips. Despite the age of this Gainsesville get-away, Director Susan Kleven, says its ever-changing features and uniqueness still wows its visitors year round.

"One of the things that a lot of people say is that we have a number of species that we exhibit here that they don't see at other zoos," said Susan. "We have a lot of amazing zoos in the north Texas area, but we do offer something a little bit different, a little bit more intimate surroundings, as well as animals that a lot of people don't expect to see."

With animals from all over the world including north and south America along with some favorite furry friends from down under, the African Savannah exhibit is the largest. For a "buck" per piece of food, you can even feed the giraffes.

And that's not the only hands-on exhibit. Deers are also ready and willing to be hand fed by guests but many visitors find goats to be some of the most playful...and most hungry...animals around.

Here at the zoo, the whole family can experience exotic animals in their own special environments this summer. But to beat the heat, Susan let's us in on a little secret:

"The Frank Buck Zoo is a great place to come, especially more early in the morning, close to opening time. The weather is a little bit cooler to enjoy the surroundings. The animals are a little bit more active in the morning, the later in the day that it gets, a little bit warmer, a little bit warmer for us and it is for the animals as well," Susan said.

Whatever your favorite animal may be...deers, turtles, tigers or giraffes...Frank Buck Zoo has something the whole family to enjoy.

Open daily, Frank Buck Zoo holds its next special event "Zoo Boo" on October 27th. This family-friendly, non-scary evening of treats, costumes and games is to bring safe community fun.
