SHERMAN, TX -- Across Texoma, parents of freshmen college students will soon be sending them off to their first day of college.
For many, that means living away home for the first time. For this Mom's Everyday Home segment, we take at look at ways first year students can adjust to their new living space.
When college senior, Abdurrahman Allawala first left home for Austin college, he was apprehensive but hopeful.
"Leaving home was difficult but it was also a life changing experience and I took it really, really objectively," he said.
Like many first year college students, he had to adjust to living with roommates in dorms before moving on to a small apartment.
"You know it's like, I'm going to embrace this and see how this is supposed to fit."
Lonnie Watterson, President of Signature Home Furniture in Sherman, cautions college students about a common mistake.
"I think one of the things I see people do the most is try and buy too much to fit into a small room," said Watterson. "Size-wise we've got computer programs to show that can scale it to fit your room. It's really important for us to show 'em exactly what it is that they need to fit in their room."
Getting the funds to furnish your first apartment or home is another common concern. Austin College Senior Blake Barnes is working at the bookstore “ just for the rush of school for the first couple of week." But for those who are watching their pocketbook, Watterson suggests several options like traditional financing with interest-free time...
"There are options for people who maybe have some dings on their credit," he said. "There are some no credit-check finance plans that still even offer interest-free financing but it's a way to still get furniture on financing terms."
...and package deals.
"You can put together a whole living room set for less than a thousand dollars," continued Watterson.
Signature Home Furniture even has options for students concerned about sticking with the latest trends.
"Being able to keep the newest looks, the freshest looks, but also some of the older traditional looks," said Watterson. "We have a good mix of everything for everybody. We also deal with quite a few direct importers to where we're able to cut out a lot of the middle man."
In the end, once you've got your college home organized efficiently, you can focus less on the lack of space and more on the college experience like Blake did. “That's what I look forward to is coming back and seeing everyone, getting back to student life and my friends so... I love it.”
And Abdurrahman says, “Moving in with someone else, really did open my eyes. And looking back on it, I'm glad I did.
