ARMORE, OK -- With July 2012 on record for being the hottest summer month in history, this Mom's Everday Money edition shares ways to cut down energy costs AND keep your cool this summer season.

"Shut off the lights." "Close the door." "Don't touch the thermostat."
Not only are these phrases you may be telling your kids this summer
but actual ways to keep heat out of your homes and money in your wallet.

Using a few simple tips and tools are all you need to save on utility costs. Preston Dalton of Preston Dalton Siding and Windows says to start with proper insulation and ventilation

"Without the proper ventilation in your house, all the insulation in the world isn't going to completely fix your problem. You need proper ventilation to keep your attic a little bit cooler because your attic can get up to 160-180 degrees," says Preston.

Replace old wood doors to keep out the heat and other unwanted guests.

"A lot of people say well I've got a good door but they've got to be sealed properly. These have that magnetic stripping and they're steel doors so steel doors of course give you more security."

And invest in special coated windows.

"That heat just penetrates through that glass but with that 12 coat system we've got it stops 93% of the UV rays and the UV rays is what causes the heat problems."

Once installed...be sure to keep them closed.

So we've learned how to save money and energy inside the home. But what about outside? Specifically siding.

For this, Preston says, "You want to just blanket your house, that's why you get those insulated siding panels."

If you have a frame house, putting vinyl siding on it is a great way to insulate your home from the heat and cold and in exchange, you will use less energy heating and cooling your home and it will cost you less.

And, finally, check for cracks around your home and weather stripping them with caulk.

"You've got to seal them properly, if you don't, you'll have air blowing in, you'll have dust blowing in. You get all kinds of problems. And we seal them really good and make sure you don't have and you can use a special kind of caulking and that's real critical."

A cool home is a happy home so before your utility bill skyrockets, try putting some of these tips into action.

"It's the ultimate way to beat the heat around here," says Preston. "Which, you can't beat it but you can help."
