Olympian chiropractic care

DENISON, TX -- As you watch the world-class athletes perform at the London Olympics, it may seem each body part works in synchronized harmony. Is there a secret? This Moms Everyday segment uncovers a practice that many Olympians are now using....chiropractic manipulation.

Getting faster, stronger and better is a goal many athletes share but it's usually through strict diets and training schedules. Now we're finding world-class athletes are adding chiropractic care to their regimen.

Dr. Dustin Bergeron of Denison Chiropractic Clinic says chiropractors have been working with these athletes for years. And the techniques used can greatly affect performance...possibly making a difference of win or lose for Olympians. .

"Over in the Olympics, there's chiropractors behind the scenes," he said. "A friend of mine that works in Austin, she actually got to fly over there to take care of them. So if you go in terms of athletics and people who are trying to reach optimum health or cut a second or two off their time on race, they're seeing a chiropractor for that just to make their body work better".

Although the popularity of chiropractics has grown around the world,
studies published in the 'American Journal of Public Health' show uncertainty about its effectiveness. Even the Olympians I met in this video who all trained in North Texas and made it to London, have neither confirmed or denied their use of chiropractors.

But for rowing Olympian Anna Cummins, this drug-free, surgery-free treatment is why she won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
She credits spinal manipulation for healing 2 degenerative discs before her big win and says she's never felt more healthy. She shared this on a YouTube video promoting chiropractic care:

"I wasn't getting sick as often and little things like that. Allergies went way down, but that makes sense too because the nerves that went to my low back that kept seizing, those were looser, and the nerves that went down to my legs, those were able to push harder and the nerves that went to lungs and kept my immune system going, those were doing better too."

Before Anna's first realignment, she says the deteriorating gelatinous material between her discs caused her great pain down her legs.
Dr. Robert Bergeron explains what can happen to degenerative discs if left untreated.

"It'll eventually get to the point where it's bone on bone," he said. "This is not much we can do when it get this bad. People really should get their spines checked, they get their teeth checked and how much more important is your spine or your nervous system."

Some Olympians receive chiropractic care to enhance their performance, others to overcome injuries faster. But the father son team of Denison Chiropractic say the benefits can be had by anyone.
