Road rage wrecks on the rise in Texas

TEXOMA -- According to a database that tracks vehicle accidents throughout the state, road rage is on the rise in Texas. With Bexar County leading the state in road rage-related crashes, here's how this affects Texoma drivers and tips to avoid being a road rage victim.

According to a San Antonio newspaper, Bexar County officers cited road rage as a contributing factor in nearly 700 wrecks that injured 280 people since 2007.

These numbers exceed those in larger counties with even more residents and traffic, including Dallas. And now, since Lake Texoma is a popular area attraction this time of year, local officials urge drivers to keep road rage accidents down in this area by following safe driving practices.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Officer Michael Green says, just like when operating a boat, one way to avoid driving aggressively is to be courteous to other drivers. Remember, they're our neighbors too.

Maintain a safe following distance by using the 3 second rule. This means once a car ahead of you passes a landmark, you should pass that same landmark no sooner than 3 seconds afterwards.

Another rule of thumb is every 10 miles per hour you drive, should equal one car length between you and the next vehicle ahead of you.
So if you're at 60 miles per hour, you should drive 6 car lengths behind the next car.

Finally, statistics show that a person texting and driving, have the same driving patterns and characteristics as a person drinking and driving. So, Officer Green says that if you must text, by all means just pull over.

"Treat other people like you want to be treated," said Green. "Drive in a safe manner. Be aware of people in your surroundings. If you need to text, pull over. If you just can't help yourself and you got to answer a text message, pull over."

Throughout Texas from 2007 to 2011, road rage has played a factor in close to 4,500 crashes, injuring nearly 2,000 people and killing 32. In the last four years, however, road rage accidents across the state have decreased.

Man, there sure are alot of hotheads in Texoma. I though the Texas vs. OU people saved all the hate for football season. No wonder everyone is on blood pressure medication. The only time I get mad is when Mindy cuts me off. Love you Hon.

TURN SIGNALS. They're supposed to allow other drivers to anticipate what you're about to do. Not to remind yourself what you're doing after you've already started doing it.

All of these comments should be taken into consideration except the ignorant, prejudice, bias ones because it is our lives we are talking about. Left lane drivers cause congestion especially when coupled with slow traffic in the right hand lane. Cell phone use has surpassed drunk driving deaths and hands free equipment is affordable. On ramps have to yield to traffic when there is no access but drivers should scan the service roads for on coming traffic and make provisions if possible. You idiots that refuse to get over even when you can are asking to die or kill, is that what you want? It wouldn't be your fault right? Because you have the right of way? you can tell that to Saint Peter. Casino traffic needs to slow down. Why are you in such a hurry to give away your money. And exiting from the right hand lane at the last minute, are you really that stupid? And taking picture of young and/or healthy people parking in the handicapped space is not a bad idea. Safe driving takes full cooperation from everyone. You just can't keep driving poorly and expect someone else to conform to your bad driving habits. The rules of the road and free tests are on the web 24/7. If you have a question, look it up.

Just came back up from Texas to Oklahoma 2 days ago. I used to live in Tx. and I would rather drive around Oklahomans any day of the week. Many Texas drivers are hot heads who are obsessed with downing Oklahoman's--Mike and Jobe are good examples of this. Okie drivers are friendlier and in OK. you don't have to wait for 50 years at every stupid stop light like u do in TX.

Okie, then please stay on the other side of the red river, and you can keep your rough highways that tey are so bumpy to drive on and your holes to go along with it, at least in Texas we have the money to pay for good higways around here. Also learn to ready the signs when it says Left Lane For Passing Only!

The reason Texas driver are so bad is that most are from somewhere else. Illegals from all over the world as well as legals from all over the world and you throw a slow driving Texas country boy or Okie and things get dangerous. Texas is the worst place for left lane drivers and they purposely drive under the speed limit daring anyone to defy them and they wonder why Texas is number one for road rage.

They do have a Walmart up there, but evidently even the Okies can't stand being in a crowd of Okies. I think the food stamps go further down here and there is always plenty of empty handicap parking.

Actually the Okies come to the Texas Wal-Mart because we don't tax food in Texas and they do in Okie-homa.
