Today we introduce you to the Ella Mae Brown Crisis Center of Grayson County. It’s another one of the shelters that received the Emergency Shelter Grant.

Located on North Travis Street in Sherman, just north of Hwy. 82, the Crisis Center is a non-profit organization committed to helping the victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

The Center's Executive Director, Rachel Morgan: “We’ve been here for over 30 years. We operate a 24-hour hotline. We have groups several nights a week. We have bedrooms for single women, women that come here with their children. If we have male victims - we can provide services for them also.”

The 10 bedrooms available for women and their children have been adopted by local organizations, who decorated each room. As you can see, these rooms are not what many people might think of when they think of a “shelter.” They are warm, cozy, and provide a welcome home to those who need some security and safety. Additionally, there is a full kitchen, living room, dining room, laundry facility, and a playroom.

Assistance is provided at no charge, thanks to the generosity of our community and grants, like the Emergency Solutions Grant.

“What’s neat about that, anyone who calls our hotline, if they’re not needing our program, we have a place to refer them where we know they’ll get good services. And it just provides some more continuity.”

There are many misconceptions about those who need shelter, and Rachel has an opinion about what the biggest misconception is about the victims of domestic violence.

“People asking the question “why didn’t she just leave?” I think that a lot more victims would leave if they knew they would be safe when they left. A lot of times the decisions are made for their family – for their children. Here we ask, ‘How were you able to get away? How brave you must have been to be able to get away. Let’s tap in to those resources that you have.’”

The thought of getting away from domestic violence is scary – perhaps scarier than the violence itself. But you can come to the Ella Mae Brown Crisis Center – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
