GRAYSON COUNTY, TX -- Sherman and Denison students joined others heading back to class Monday but it's not too late to work on ways to make your child's first day a little easier.
One tip is to allow for extra time in the morning so your kids can get ready without rushing and eat a good breakfast. Some kids are shy about meeting new classmates so allow for extra time this morning to sit down and talk with them. Along with their lunch money, slide a supportive note in their backpack to give them a nice surprise during the day. And before they leave, do a check on their backpack, wardrobe and school supplies.
The morning is also a good time to prepare a healthy lunch for your child or even the night before. School is where children spend most of their day and eat a lot of their daily calories. And almost a third of children are either overweight or obese.
Although some school cafeterias are working on healthier options,
experts say it would benefit parents to know exactly what their kids eat and drink throughout the day. To prevent childhood obesity, Texas Health WNJ Dietician Kelly Hughes says providing healthier school lunches is up to the parents.
"They're the ones doing the grocery shopping, they're the ones putting the foods in their mouths so they're very important and play a very big role," she said.
Dr. Hughes adds that an ideal lunch but would something like this one that includes a turkey sandwich on whole wheat with mustard, low fat cheese and lettuce, 17 grapes or a small sliced apple, 1/2 cup of baby carrots or celery with 2 tablespoons of light ranch, and pretzel sticks of 1 cup of fat free popcorn. Finish off the meal with a cup of milk or water.
