Safe Family Report: Protecting Your Skin from Too Much Sun
Reporter: Abby Dunn

06-29-06 – According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer rates are climbing. The A.A.D. says there will be a million new cases of skin cancer this year.

Many adults admit that they know the dangers of too much sun. However, 40% of Americans still don’t wear enough protection. Experts say skin cancer is highly preventable, if the proper precautions are taken.

Doctors say you should apply sunscreen throughout the day - every day, even if the sun doesn't come out. Nearly 80% of the sun's ultraviolet rays actually pass right through the clouds. Also, try to avoid the sun during the peak hours of 10AM to 4PM. That’s when the sun’s rays are at their strongest.

With the proper precautions, you can enjoy the sunshine, while avoiding the health hazard.
