Safe Family Report: Staying Cool Indoors
Reporter: Abby Dunn

07-18-06 - Temperatures across the country and right here on Texoma are reaching triple digits on almost every day. Even when you escape the heat by staying indoors, experts say you still have to take care of yourself.

It is important to keep the air conditioner on for a majority -- if not all, of the day. Doctors say that's because the sun beating down on your home can cause the indoor temperature to rise to uncomfortable levels.

However, some people do not have air conditioners in their homes. In this case, it’s a good idea to have an electric fan. Try to keep the fan running as often as you can - but be aware, fans will do you no good if temperatures are in the 90s. Basically, they just blow around the heat, and do not prevent heat related illnesses.

Taking a cool shower or bath is also a good way to cool off. You should also be sure you use your stove and oven less often when it's hot outside so you can keep the temperature cooler inside your home.

For some people, it’s a good idea to try and spend much of your time during the day in a public library, or a shopping mall - some public location that has an air conditioner of it's own.

Above all else, it’s important to rest when you can when temperatures outside or too hot. Avoid exerting yourself and drink lots of water.
