DENISON, TX - A sudden downpour in Denison is to blame for a deadly accident on Highway 75. Around 7:00 p.m. a pickup truck traveling north on 75 hydroplaned and the driver lost control. Police said the truck veered across the median just south of Ray Yards bridge and into oncoming traffic. Both vehicles flipped over and rolled down the hill.
Four people were in the truck, which crashed into a purple car traveling south on 75, with a couple from Royse City, TX, inside. The woman passenger, 72-year-old Anne Marie Theken, died from the impact. Her husband, 72-year-old James Theken, appeared to be in stable condition.
Firefighters said the driver of the pickup truck was also seriously injured, but the other three passengers appeared to be in better shape. Traffic was backed up for several miles. Other drivers said the rain made conditions dangerous and slowed down traffic. Several people, including Debbie Black, pulled over and jumped out to help and call 9-1-1.
"Just pray for the families, they just, there were several people really hurt, so I just feel bad that it happened but there were just some terrible weather conditions at the moment," said Black, who saw the accident happen.
All six people involved were taken by ambulance to Texoma Medical Center, where Theken was pronounced dead.
