9-8-04 - The debate over sex education is heating up in Texas, and local schools are taking a stand.

The state is getting ready to adopt a new textbook, which would teach contraception. It would be in direct conflict to Sherman and Denison ISD’s policy of an abstinence-only curriculum. Their belief is that key elements of sex-education should begin in the home, and parents should be the ones to decide what and when their children learn.

Currently, the district uses a health textbook that is 11 years old. State education leaders will vote in November to replace the book with an updated version that includes education about contraception. If they do make the switch, Sherman and Denison school leaders say they won’t use the textbook.
