THACKERVILLE, OK - Thackerville Public Schools is gearing up for another school bond that will go before voters later this month. The previous school bond failed last April, but students and staff say they hope this time will pass. Claudia de la Pena has more.

Thackerville Public Schools says its preparing for its third school bond to be back in front of voters again on August 24, and school officials are asking for the community to come out and vote.

"We have been given a great opportunity of the donation of the land," says superintendent David Herron, who adds the bond would provide the money to build a new high school and replace the current overcrowded building.

"We're trying to be good stewards of our money so that we could look not just today but down in the future of saving funds to facilitate our students' education and not just maintain our facilities."

Herron says in the last six years, enrollment at Thackerville Public Schools has gone up about 7 percent. Both buildings could also serve as a shelter during severe weather. The monolithic dome design that's proposed would save the district as much as 50 percent on utilities.

"In that location we have the ability to hook up to other utilities that will also provide us a septic system where now we can utilize all that land for prospective growth," Herron says.

The old school would be used to expand the current elementary school. Herron says the new proposal is based on not only the kids' best interests but the community's as well.

"It's a multipurpose-type facility, not only to use for our basketball games but like our graduation, our plays through our drama department, along with other educational needs that we might need throughout the future as well."

Herron says if passed by voters the bond also has a duration of eight years, and the new proposal will cost about $3 for every $100 of property taxes.

Thackerville voters go to the polls August 24.
