MADILL, OK -- One young boy's commitment to help a stranger is complete. The 7th grader from Madill grew out his hair for a full year for the non-profit “Locks of Love,” but the process wasn't always fun for the student.

We first introduced you to Dakota Looney back in March, as he was growing out his hair and wrapping up his 6th grade year. On Wednesday, he'll be starting his 7th grade year with a new hair cut. But he says he's starting the new school year with much more than just short hair.

It was no ordinary hair cut, for Dakota Looney, 12, it's the culmination of a year commitment to a kid he's never met.

"It’s just really exciting to know that somebody is going to get my hair and that I might see it again,” Dakota said.

Over the past year, Dakota's grown his hair past his shoulders so he could donate it to “Locks of Love,” but the process - through his 6th grade year - to get to this donation day hasn't be easy.

"You're going out of your way if you're a male - people calling you a girl and everything else,” Dakota explained.

But he never let un-kind words cut his good deed short. He stuck with his decision to grow out his hair, wanting to give it to a child battling cancer.

"Being that he's young man, it's probably a little more of a challenge, but it’s really nice to applaud him to do that because he's making a really good contribution. And he seems like he feels really good about it – which is really wonderful to see,” Kathi Honea a stylist at Hair Haven said.

Because Dakota's hair has never been chemically treated, Honea says it will make the best wig possible, and Dakota's actions clearly touched everyone in the salon.

"If you can get them to make good decisions when they're young, maybe they'll make good decisions and make less bad ones, because the world today is full of bad decisions,” Mike Looney, Dakota’s father said.

Dakota is not only leaving behind more than 8 inches of hair, he's taking with him a life lesson that he hopes to share with others -

"Not to make fun of anybody because of how they look, because because deep down they might be a nice person, “ Dakota said.

Dakota's hair cut was provided free by Kathi Honea and the Hair Haven salon. The hair it’s self will be packaged up and shipped to “Locks of Love.”
