SHERMAN, TX - A blood drive was held Wednesday to help one of Sherman's finest who is fighting for his life. Josh Stevenson has more.
Billy Stigger was a 17-year veteran of the Sherman Police Department when he noticed something was wrong.
"I was light headed, so I went to a doctor, who sent me to a cardiologist, and at that point they told me that I had congestive heart failure," Stigger says.
Stigger is on the transplant list and is waiting for a new heart, so to show their support, the Sherman Police Department held a blood drive Wednesday in his honor.
"We feel like he was a good officer, he is a good man who served his community, so we are trying to give back to him to help him out," says Chief Tom Watt of the Sherman Police Department.
In addition to the blood drive a benefit shooting competition will be held at Red River Firearms on September 26 to help with Stigger's medical expenses. Stigger says while he isn't healthy enough to work, in his heart he is still a cop.
"I still feel like I am part of that family," Billy says.
And according to Chief Tom Watt, the police department will stand by Stigger whether he wears a uniform or not.
"We are a brotherhood and Bill will always be able to count on us and whatever he needs we are going to try and provide it for him," Chief Watt said.
Sherman Police say as of 5 p.m. Wednesday the blood drive for Billy Stigger had collected 75 pints of blood.
