TISHOMINGO, OK--A broken pipe leaves residents across Tishmomingo without running water on Saturday.

Residents headed to to the Hillcrest Nursing home for bucket after bucket of clean water from a nearby tanker truck.

They also pulled up to Pennington Park to pick up free drinking water after a major pipe burst early Saturday morning and shut down water to residents across Tishomingo.

"Well it's quite a project because it's not on flat land," city manager Jack Yates, said.

"It's in kind of the draw of Pennington Creek, so it'll be uphill work, literally, for the guys."

Yates said a crew began working early Saturday morning trying to repair more than 100 feet of broken pipe that burst between the city water tower and filter tank.

As temperatures climbed to 100 degrees, residents tried to find relief at the local Dairy Queen.

"People who've been coming up here have been really hot, really sweating," one employee said.

But even that business was forced to close down around 3 p.m., due to the lack of water.

Mayor Lewis Parkhill was busy handing out bottles of water along with police, fire, and EMS staff to anyone in the area able to drive up.

"Most of the citizens have been very understanding. There have been very few people who have been short of temper, everybody has been cooperative, they've been understanding," Parkhill said.

But the city was also busy delivering water to those unable to leave their homes.

In all, the city officials believes between 300,000 to 400,000 gallons of water leaked out of the broken pipe.

While it's not clear what exactly caused the break, Mayor Parkhill says with the high temperatures they've been experiencing lately, it's not extremely uncommon for breaks like the one to occur. However as a long time Tishomingo resident, he says it's certainly the first one he's ever experienced.

Parkhill says the water line has been repaired, and now crews are working on flushing water through the pipe. Parkhill says he hopes residents will have access to running water by midnight, with near normal water pressure by Sunday morning.

City officials are asking for voluntary water boil through mid-afternoon on Sunday though, just as a precautionary measure.
